Rounded by water rather than machinery, which is why the shape sits soft and natural in a bed instead of looking cut. They come washed clean of dust and fines, so the gold tones show straight off the truck, and graded to a consistent size so a top-up matches the load you started with.
The same rounded stone is what goes into dry creek beds, under downpipes to break the fall of water, and into drainage pits. It moves water without washing away, and it looks intentional doing it.
