Black Mexican Beach Pebbles

Pool interiors & spray-on finishes

Smooth black pebbles, graded to a strict 6 mm. Ocean-rounded basalt, not machine-tumbled — a genuinely rare stone that very few yards in the country carry.

About this material

Graded to a strict 6 mm.

Natural basalt off the beaches of Baja California, rounded by the surf and gathered by hand. That's what gives it the flat black finish and the shape you can't get out of a tumbler. Graded to a strict 6 mm, so a bed lies even and a top-up matches what's already down.

A tumbler can round a stone, but it can't reproduce this surface. Machine-tumbled stone comes up with a uniform polish; surf-rounded basalt keeps a flat, deep finish that reads as stone rather than as product.

Held at a strict 6 mm, it works in exposed aggregate concrete and in pool interiors where the stone has to sit evenly in the matrix and expose consistently across the whole surface. A mixed-size stone gives you a patchy exposure; a single grade gives an even one.

You can't manufacture them — the ocean does the rounding, so supply is only ever what the Baja beaches give up. Hand-gathered and shipped in. Most yards in the country have never had it on the ground.
