Mini Mexican Beach Pebbles

Pool interiors & spray-on finishes

Smooth black pebbles, graded to a strict 2–3 mm. Ocean-rounded basalt, not machine-tumbled — a rare stone in a fine grade, and fine grades are the hardest of the lot to source.

About this material

Graded to a strict 2–3 mm.

Natural basalt off the beaches of Baja California, rounded by the surf and gathered by hand. That's what gives it the flat black finish and the shape you can't get out of a tumbler. Graded to a strict 2–3 mm — tight enough to lie flat as ground cover and to run consistently through a spray-on pool or aggregate finish.

The material is limited to begin with, and screening it to a tight fine band narrows what comes out the other end further still. That's why the small cut is harder to lay hands on than the coarse one, here or anywhere.

At 2–3 mm it packs in tight around plants, between pavers and across pot tops without looking chunky, and it's small enough to run consistently through spray-applied pool and aggregate finishes. That combination — genuinely rare stone at a workable grade — is why it turns up in high-end work.

You can't manufacture them — the ocean does the rounding, so supply is only ever what the Baja beaches give up. Hand-gathered and shipped in. Fine grades are the hardest of the lot to get hold of, and most yards in the country have never had this on the ground.
