A fine black sand, and a rare one — natural volcanic glass, black right the way through the grain. It won't rub or wash pale the way dyed sand does.
About this material
Obsidian is volcanic glass: lava that cooled too fast to crystallise. As a fine sand it holds a depth and a catch of light that dyed quartz doesn't get near. Clean and even, so it lies flat across a bed and runs consistent through a spray-on finish.
It only forms where the volcanic conditions were right, and very little of what exists ever gets processed into a saleable sand. Most black sand on the market is dyed quartz. This isn't, and there is not much of it about.
