Smaller white gravels scatter and migrate off a path; larger ones are awkward to walk on. This band sits where it stays put without being uncomfortable underfoot, and it's heavy enough not to wash out of a bed in a downpour.
White stone shows everything, so it's washed to get the dust off before it's delivered — dusty white gravel reads grey the moment it's spread. Matting underneath is what keeps soil from working up through it and dulling it over the following seasons.
